(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 6)
Amdahl is offering a new availability management service to customers that
need 99% or better uptime from their mainframes. The service, costing from
$50,000 to $75,000, takes seven to eight weeks to complete.
434.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 4/26/93, pg. 8)
In response to current market conditions, Amdahl announced a new round of
cuts, saying that 1,100 jobs, 12.9% of its worldwide workforce, will be
eliminated.

** INK IS LESS RED, VP WAS BLUE
(IW, 4/19/93, pg. 15)
For DEC's third quarter, ending March 27, the company reported a loss of $30
million. This is a major improvement over the $311 million deficit DEC
reported for the same period a year ago. DEC's new sales and marketing head,
Ed Lucente, joins DEC after 30 years with IBM and less than two years with
Northern Telecom.
436.
** SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
(IW, 4/19.93)
Advertisement headlines or bullets included: When Less Is MORE, Let
Digital's Computer Downsizing Solutions Give You More POWER over Your
Information; Enabling Your Company to Work as It wants to Work;
Worldwide consulting, training, and system integration professionals;
Multivendor integration; Unbounded capacity at far less cost; and Take
Advantage of Our Experience.
437.
** DEC CPU DOWNSIZING THRUST IN GEAR
(EN, 4/26/93, pg. 14)
With the software offering for its Alpha AXP architecture starting to fill out,
DEC is starting a computer downsizing marketing campaign aimed at IBM
and Unisys mainframe accounts plus its own installed base. The new program
is a big change for DEC because of its emphasis on consulting services as
much as product sales. Part of the strategy is aimed simply at keeping DEC's
own customers from defecting.
438.
** COMMENTS
((UGX, 4/26/93, pg. 8)
Starting this last Monday, April 26, DEC will be laying off 40% of its US sales
force, 2,500 people.

439.
** IBM CHASES APOLLO USERS
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 16)
IBM is joining the pack racing after HP's Domain user base. Together with
Atlanta-based Enabling Technologies Group, IBM last week announced a
collection of specialized software migration tools and services to help
Apollo/Domain users migrate to IBM's Unix-based RISC System/6000 line.
[ Editor's note: This was the total article.]
440.
** HOTEL CHAIN INTEGRATES SYSTEMS VIA UNIX
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 66)
The challenge for ITT Sheraton was to eliminate redundant work processes
caused by system incompatibilities at local hotels. The technology chosen was
HP 9000s.
[ Editor's note: Article presents good reasons for a single architecture
strategy.]
441.
** HP AND FILENET TIE KNOT
(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 7)
HP has finalized its agreement with FileNet for implementation of FileNet's
document imaging and WorkFlo software products on the PA RISC-based HP
3000 and HP 9000 business system and servers.
442.
** HP SIGNS DEAL WITH WANG
(WN, 5/93, pg. 35)
HP has formed a strategic relationship with Wang which calls for Wang to port
its Unix-based integrated imaging and office software to the HP 9000 Series
800 business servers and resell HP's Series 800 servers worldwide. HP will
provide Wang with marketing and field support to help sell Wang's software
and will help Wang port its software from IBM's AIX operating system to HP-
UX.
443.
** UNIFACE TO PORT TOOLS FOR MAC, HP 3000.
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 79)
Uniface announced it will support HP's Allbase/SQL database on HP 3000
computers. The version for Allbase/SQL and Turbo Image databases running
on MPE/IX will be available in the third quarter of 1993.
444.
** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
(IW, 4/19/93, pg. 10)
Analysts say HP and Banyan will soon reveal a plan to integrate Banyan's
networking software with HP's OpenView for Windows and OpenView for
Unix network management platforms.
445.
** END NEAR FOR APPLE/MICROSOFT SUIT
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 1)
The stage was set last week for the culmination of Apple's lengthy copyright
infringement suit against Microsoft and HP. The presiding judge set May 5 as
the date to resolve three remaining infringement issues.
446.
** SUCH A DEAL
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 8)
Brigham Young University has worked out a precedent-setting software
licensing pact with CA. The school is free to use all licensed CA software
under any operating system for 500 concurrent users. The school is still in the
early stages of downsizing from its IBM MVS environment, and while it may
decide on HP/UX, IBM's OS/2, Novell's NetWare and Data General's DG-UX
architecture are also being considered.
447.
** DATA TOPICS
(EN, 4/26/93, pg. 14)
Lead times remain longer than planned on the PA-RISC workstations
introduced by HP last fall, with the company attributing the shipment
difficulties to unspecified manufacturing processes.

IBM ARTICLES
**************************************************************
448.
** THREE SCRAPPY STARTUPS THAT COULD HELP REJUVENATE
IBM
(BW, 5/3/93, pg. 138)
The ventures, called Taligent, Somerset, and Kaleida, are working on
operating-system software, microprocessor chips, and multi-media software,
respectively. By the time all their products appear in 1995, they will have
consumed several hundred million dollars.
449.
** RAW, RANDOM DATA
(DM, 4/15/93, pg. 16)
One day after announcing its own, long-awaited relational database
management system for the RS/6000, IBM announced a strategic partnership
to optimize the competing Sybase database for the same platform.
450.
** A CHANGE IN DEMAND
(CIO, 4/15/93, pg. 20)
An IT search consultant reports that senior managers have changed their
expectations for filling vacant IS executive positions. In the '80s, companies
wanted CIOs who were strategic visionaries, but today they seek bottom -line
performers. The current emphasis is on how technology in specific terms can
help other functions.
451.
** IBM's GERSTNER, IN PUBLIC DEBUT, VOWS TO CUT MORE AND
EMPHASIZE SERVICES
(WSJ, 4/27/93, pg. A3)
IBM's chairman signaled he plans more staff cuts and greater emphasis on
consulting and services. He said he doesn't envision a wholesale breakup of the
company.
452.
** SERIES/1 MIGRATION NO EASY TASK
(CW, 4/19/93, pg. 6)
IBM's withdrawal of Series/1 support, coupled with the cost/performance
benefits of standard microprocessors and operating systems, has accelerated
the exodus.
[ Editor's note: Check the GSY hotline subject CONVERT after 5/1/93 for
more information on migrating S/1 accounts to HP-UX.]

MICROSOFT ARTICLES
**************************************************************
453.
** MICROSOFT NET HITS $243M, SALES JUMP 41% IN Q3
(EN, 4/19/93, pg. 7)
Income for Q3FY93 ending March 31, 1993 was $243 million, an increase of
36% over the $179 million reported for Q3FY92. Revenues for the quarter
totaled $958 million a 41% increase of Q3FY92. Net income for the first nine
months of fiscal 1993 rose 38% to $688 Million from $498 million for the
corresponding period of fiscal 1992.
454.
** MICROSOFT "SEEKS WABI LICENSE FEES" MAY DO ITS OWN
WINDOWS-ON-UNIX
(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 5)
The answer to whether Microsoft will actually sue Sun over the Windows-on-
Unix WABI application binary interface is still unknown. Observers of
Microsoft say what it's really interested in is the licensing fees it says Sun
should pay.
**************************************************************
SUN ARTICLES
**************************************************************
455.
** SOLOMON AND GOLDMAN SACHS DOWNGRADE SUN STOCK
(UGX, 4/26/93, pg. 2)
Both companies have removed the stock from their recommended buy lists.
Goldman thinks NT and Pentium are going to be more than Sun can handle.
This judgment is based on Goldman's view of Sun's business as 80% to 85%
client side where it thinks Windows, especially NT, will dominate in
client/server systems, even where high-performance client products are
needed.
**************************************************************
UNISYS ARTICLES
**************************************************************
456.
** DOWN ON UPGRADES
(IW, 4/19/93, pg. 16)
A disgruntled Unisys customer is asking Congress for legislation to determine
liability when software doesn't work as promised. The customer upgraded its
three U/6000 Unix-based processors with a new version of the operating
system and an Informix database. Numerous system functions became
seriously degraded.

457.
** WHO IS NUMBER ONE WORLDWIDE IN WORKSTATIONS? IT
DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU MEAN BY THE TERM
(UGX, 4/26/93, pg. 4)
IDC reports that DEC's share declined 14.5% in revenue and 3.6% in volume.
Sun, HP, and IBM all grew their shares. Sun workstations accounted for a
38% share, HP had 17.4%, and IBM 7%. IDC's workstation figures include
sales of server systems that are dedicated to workstation environments, tools
and utilities software such as operating systems, compilers, software
engineering tools and graphics libraries. Primary distribution must be via
direct or OEM sales to technical markets.
458.
** COSE FIRMS EXPECTED TO PICK UP SUNSELECT WINDOWS ON
UNIX ABI
(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 1)
WABI, SunSelect's ace-in-the-hole Windows-on-Unix software, moved closer
to being adopted by the COSE crew last week as licensing agreements
circulated for signature. A pawn in the chess match between Unix and
Microsoft, WABI is starting to be described in some circles as more important
than COSE itself.
459.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 8)
Hitachi has begun developing a parallel processor using 200 of HP's 100-Mips
PA-RISC chips. It expects to commercialize the thing in 1995.
460.
** THE COST OF OPEN SYSTEMS
(DM, 4/15/93, pg. 15)
Cipione, Mead Data Central vice president, says that companies planning
mainframe to Unix migration should expect to experience large spending.
However, once the migration is complete, Cipione hopes to shrink head count
and reduce annual IT capital spending by 80% compared to pre-open systems
days.
461.
** LOW YIELD PUSHES PENTIUM DELIVERIES BACK TO OCTOBER
(UGX, 4/26/93, pg. 1)
Intel's Pentium chip is experiencing another round of serious delivery problems
because of low yield. The limited supplies that are available will go to
Intel's large customers.
462.
** UNIX CLUSTERS HAVE AMBITIONS TO REACH VAX/VMS LEVEL
FUNCTIONALITY
(UGX, 4/19/93, pg. 2)
Six months from the launch, Sequent systems claims it has won 30 customers
for its high availability clustering technology, most with several hundred users
attached. DEC's tight VAX/VMS clustering is the benchmark to aim for and
Sequent claims they are close to DEC's model.`
